Of the Top 10 Nutrition Trends for 2010. The third is:

Trend #3 – Everyday Eco-Living – Many people have been gradually making “living green” part of their life. This extends from recycling at home, work, and play to selecting more locally grown foods and goods. However, although many people desire foods grown or processed locally, when it comes to price, it has to be cost-effective for them. As we see a more people buying organic foods, we expect the price of organic goods to decrease ,which should help to increase the use of organic goods to grow in your local supermarkets.

- This is a good thing! The phrase Going Green has never been so widely used. It is amazing how things have changed in just a few years. Ever since the gas prices went sky high did people wake up and see how our lifestyles will eventually affect our livelihood. We are learning to respect the local farmers and appreciate fresh picked fruits and vegetables. We understand that we may not always be able to count on imported, delicacies and need to learn more about what is grown in our own towns and state.

I do hope more and more quality food is available at an affordable price. I would prefer eating organic fruits and vegetables as I would like to avoid the pesticides and get as much nutrition from my food as possible. Currently organic produce at the grocery store is often less than desirable. It looks like it has been sitting there for weeks and does not always taste fresh. I have to wonder if eating fresher non-organic fruits and veggies isn’t better for you? Taste and texture is important and they is no way disguise limp celery and carrots and mushy apples and wilted lettuce. If more and more people are demanding these products the quality will have to increase and prices will go down.

We are learning to be more careful about what we are eating and have faith in the word “organic” as we know it must be good for us. Many of us are relying on this label so we do not have to figure out what to buy on our own.
My advice is to select organic foods passively. Don’t be obsessed by the “organic” labeling. Instead learn to READ ingredients so that you know what you are buying and, eventually, eating. If you see a long list of ingredients of things you have no idea what they are, chances are it is not doing your body good. Natural, clean foods are always a better choice over highly processed, artificial, manufactured “franken” foods. To get a good laugh and possibly reduce your attraction for grocery baked goods….take a look at the ingredient label of cake or packaged dessert in the bakery of your local grocery store. Why the long, long list of strange ingredients? Have you ever made a dessert with that many scientific sounding ingredients? Compare that with a cake or pie at Whole Foods or in the natural foods section of your grocery store and you will see normal things like flour, eggs, cream, milk, sugar, butter, etc. Reading labels can really cut down your intake of processed junk food. It was the cure for me!

I challenge you to now go and read the label of those Dorritos in your cupboard…. = )

Of the Top 10 Nutrition Trends for 2010. The second is:

Trend #2 – Salt Solutions – Get ready for a salt shakedown as manufacturers begin to tweak their products in order to help to reduce the sodium in the American Diet. Health experts and government organizations have been urging that Americans cut their sodium (salt) intake for decades. However, after tasting many of these foods, we think consumers may still reach for the food with higher sodium if the manufacturers do not improve the flavor profile of packaged and prepared foods with herbs and species. For example, when we have conducted taste tests of low sodium foods with health conscious consumers, some foods, such as low sodium bread, low sodium tuna and low sodium cereals were not winners. In fact, overwhelming consumers admitted that they would just not eat a some tasteless low sodium foods and would either not eat that food, or select another alternative.

You would be amazed at how the taste of food changes when you reduce or eliminate the salt. I don’t believe in suffering…

My advice:
1. Be aware of the sodium content in your foods and either dilute them with low sodium choices or eat in moderation.
2. Reduce your tolerance of high sodium – drink lemon water on a daily basis (1 whole or 1/2 lemon in a glass of water). The lemon water makes your body more alkaline so salty foods taste very salty and you can appreciate low sodium foods.
3. Try other seasons or natural salts like Vege Sal – which has salt derived from vegetables.
4. Drink plenty of water to regulate the concentration of salt in your body.
5. Exercise to maintain your bodies ability to regulate normal levels of sodium.

Recently published were nutrition trends for 2010. The first one:

Trend #1 – Fresh Foods Made Extravagant – We expect that consumers will be choosing more fresh fruits and vegetables, packaged salad mixes, and pre-cut produce , like apple slices and chopped onions to save time, money, and unwanted calories. Even though pre-packaged produce is often a more expensive option to fresh produce, many people will continue to valuing their time by choosing to spend a few more cents in order to have more time spent on other activities, like family time.

I have to agree that this is a time saving and convenient solution. My concern here when buying packaged food is freshness and nutrition value. If I am going to eat vegetables or fruit I want them to taste good but, most importantly, be nutrient dense. So I have to say that for things that you eat on a daily basis – like apples, carrots and salads – find a way to chop them up quickly on your own. How about an apple slicer or a better knife?
You can eat carrots whole or buy the small ones in a bag.
I am always skeptical of the bagged lettuces and try to stay away if I can. I like the organic variety of spring mixes mixed with spinach that come in a plastic container. They usually seem fresh and taste great if eaten before the expiration date. You can always add iceberg lettuce to the mix for a crunchier, more family friendly salad. It all takes a few seconds.

I always say…if I am going to take the time to eat my veggies…they better be giving me some nutrition!

Vacations/Holidays and Weight Loss

Another holiday has passed. The parties have all ended. I now have to deal with the frustration of clients who were not able to lose weight over the holidays. It has been a tough week. Many of my clients did well over the holidays and were able to not overeat and select healthier foods. What they don’t understand is that the body doesn’t know it is holiday time and still processes food the same. The body doesn’t care what you could have eaten or the beverages you could have consumed. It only registers what you have eaten and uses its current fat burning abilities. When you make better choices on vacation or at parties – your body will be more apt to maintain its weight and not gain weight. In order to lose weight you have to send a consistent message, eat lean and feed your body throughout the day. You have to be consistent for at least 2-3 weeks and not have “little cheats”. This way you will start a momentum of losing weight and becoming an efficient fat burner. You can’t start this momentum when you are not in a normal routine (like holiday time). So don’t be discouraged – just resolve to start your momentum now that the social events have settled down and you can get into a healthy routine. After two to three weeks of eating well – you may find that your body will continue to lose weight even when you are not so good (momentum).

Today’s Lesson:

If you really want to lose weight – get off of the DIET DRINKS and all artificial sweeteners. That includes any thing with aspartame, acesulfame potassium, splenda, equal, sucralose or saccharin. Artificial sweeteners are linked to obesity, not weight loss. I know what the ads say and I know what Weight Watchers says but more and more studies are coming out saying that the are harmful and will impede your weight loss efforts. Many clients come into my office who drink a lot of diet drinks. Reluctantly they follow my advice and stop drinking them and focus on water. They generally lose 2 to 4lbs the first week they stop. I found an article, Confessions of a Soft Drink, that explains why this would happen and I also have my reasons. One, artificial sweeteners are chemicals and chemicals put toxins in the blood and impair your body’s ability to function properly. In particular, toxins disturb your metabolism, thyroid and hormones – all necessary to maintain a normal weight. Two, artificial sweeteners may cause you to consume more calories. The sweet of the drinks makes your body think it is getting calories but none follow, so you may find yourself more hungry. Lastly, it is important to balance your body so that you do not crave sugar and salt. By drinking sweet acidic drinks all day long – you will always crave more acid foods . Like craves like. You also want to start to enjoy the natural taste, sweetness of foods and learn to enjoy eating more healthfully. How can you do this when the “sweet” you are drinking on a daily basis is 3-10x’s sweeter than what is found in nature? You will never find anything to be sweet enough and will continue to crave sweet, fattening foods.

Action:

Learn to enjoy water. I know at first it may seem awful. But after a few days – the taste of your diet drinks will make you sick. To get your body more alkaline and remove the acid from the sweeteners, sugar and salt in your diet drink a glass of water with one entire, fresh lemon squeezed in it. Do it on a daily basis, when you feel a sugar or salt craving or after you have eaten something sweet or salty. This is a good trick to cleanse the body and get it “thinking straight” so it naturally desires healthy foods. This is a mandatory for the clients I coach because I know too well the power of a craving.

Some Healthy Alternatives:

Try Stevia. Stevia is a natural plant sweetener and also has no calories.

Celestial Seasoning came out with a product that you add to your water to flavor it. The key is that it contains Stevia and not artificial sweeteners like most other similar products. They comes in 4 flavors. Definitely a great way to increase your water intake with no calories and no chemicals. Some flavors have a little caffeine – 20g to a pack (Blueberry and Peach) and some have no caffeine (Wild Berry and Tangerine). Enjoy! I will continue to address the issue of beverages and healthy choices as the year goes on. So be sure to subscribe to my blog to stay updated.

Sometimes when you are trying desperately to lose weight and you just can’t seem to succeed – look deeper. It is not always about simply losing weight. One thing I have learned from all of my readings is that life throws lessons out to you so that you can grow as a spiritual being. One way to get our attention is to limit our ability to get something we want REALLY badly. For some that may be to lose weight. For others it may be to find a long lasting relationship and for others it is to have a child. Whatever the case – not getting what you really want can be frustrating especially when you find you can’t control the outcome. It seems the more you try to control the outcome the worse the situation gets and the more frustrated you become. I see a lot of clients in this situation with their weight. I can usually see right through them and know in an instant what their problem is. Most of them are so busy trying to whip their body into shape that they are abusing themselves and forgetting a very important thing… you have to befriend the body you want to change…

In the last few weeks I have had the pleasure of coaching a woman who is living life on a speed train trying to control every facet of her life. Along the journey her body went into stress mode and started to store fat to enable her to sustain her fast-paced lifestyle. She, in turn, has decided to punish her body even more by making it work out 5 to 7 days a week. Frustrated she turned to us for help.

Action:

This time it is definitely not just about weight. This woman is a candidate for Wife Swap. She is the typical perfectionist mother who tries to keep the perfect home, the perfect life, volunteers whenever she can and exercises her body to exhaustion. She runs on adrenelin. She speaks at a rapid pace. It is hard to get her to listen. She needs a rude awakening to get her to see what she is missing in her life. The extra weight she is carrying has her attention.

Will this be all it takes for her to get the message? or will it take some serious illness or accident to get her to slow down? I talk about all of this with her. I will repeat myself every week until she gets it. Right now I have her listening to the Self Esteem CD by Louise Hay (there is a subliminal side – the purpose here is to get her to love herself regardless of her imperfections). I also recommended Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff, Secrets of Life Every Women Should Know and I seriously want to nominate her for Wife Swap. Last week her task was to take a 1/2 day to herself – no volunteering, no exercising and no running around like a mad woman. She succeeded and thoroughly enjoyed herself. This week is a holiday week and being the perfectionist she is – I am not sure I can get her to slow down. But I did ask her to observe how she goes through each day and see if she can take a step back to enjoy her life instead of just rushing through – task after task. Her body needs some love and attention before it is going to cooperate with her and start to dump fat. Honestly, I have never worked with a case like this. But she is in my office for a reason and I will do my best to get her to see the light. Who knows – her body may start to trust her again and she may lose the weight!?

Today I spoke with a woman who simply LOVES food. I guess I can’t relate to that exactly as I have trained myself to eat to live (or feel healthy). She is a woman who entertains a lot and has social events that center around food. She likes her wine and her cordials and associates that with happiness. Today we talked about some techniques to alter her thinking.

Action

I really think you can “brain wash” yourself to be any way that you want to. So I am working with her to see food differently. We talked about strategies to combat her normal temptations with food. I told her to look around her and watch as others eat the food that tempts her. Notice how they look, notice their weight, watch as they are overpowered by it, watch their addiction. Is that how you wish to look? Is that behavior you want to emulate? Do you want to be the person influenced and controlled by the media, by food manufacturers that want you to be addicted to their foods? Develop an attitude that you are better than that…or “snob” thinking as I am calling it today. Say to yourself “I eat healthy. My body is more important to me than _____.” After a while you train yourself to not be turned on so much by food. There is so much else in life that can stimulate or motivate you. Now is the time to find that “something else” and focus on it. Right now – it can be focussing on changing your body….then you can shop for clothes as your reward.

When you have been a certain weight your whole life or have been struggling with weight for years, it can be hard to visualize yourself as a thin person. Spending time on this to break through your mental imaging barriors is extremely important. If you can not see it or believe it, how will you create it for yourself? Mental blocks or as they say “disallowing” can keep things that you want from happening. If you can visualize yourself thin and accept it as you – you will begin to think and act like a thin person would act. If you see yourself any differently, you will never take on the permanent behaviors that are necessary to achieve and maintain the body you want. Spend some time visualizing yourself lean and strong. How does it feel? How does this person act? How confident is this person? How does this person eat? Now act as if that were you – feel the power and confidence – feel your body and mind with positive thoughts – and watch as you now ALLOW yourself to transform.

Every six weeks I measure my clients to see how they are progressing with their weight loss and how their body is changing. Sometimes this is not an enjoyable task. Many times a client comes in my office after exercising. Getting close to a person and measuring their sweaty body can be gruesome. Most people don’t smell bad – but every now and then I get a treat. Today I almost had to stop breathing as I did my measurements. I thought I was going to pass out. The man is so nice that I felt bad. I got over it but I am not looking forward to week 12.

Action:

When a person changes their eating habits their body goes through a cleansing period when it lets go of all the old toxic fat and begins to build new healthy cells. If the person does not have great elimination or is really toxic – they may carry body odor. That is why we always recommend cleansing to our clients so that their body has support and can let go of toxins more quickly and efficiently. Alfalfa is a good body cleanser. I recommend working to 10/day to get a full blood cleansing. Every one’s needs are different. If you would like a cleansing regime recommendation based on your situation – Email us to request an appropriate Cleansing Program for you.

Holiday and times of celebration can be a difficult time for some as the focus is usually around food. If you want to eat more or eat differently one day than you would normally – that is okay. That is not what makes a person heavy. It is what you do the next day and the next. What is your plan for your left-over pies and treats? Are you going to keep them in the house torturing yourself if you eat them. Let’s be real – we know it will be a temptation and we know we are going to eat it if it is around. How about trying another tactic – giving it away or getting rid of it after the event. If you chose to keep it around – decide now where it will reside – your hips, thighs, stomach???

Also make sure you still eat your normal breakfast and snacks on Thanksgiving. Starving yourself all day long only makes you over-eat. Consuming all of your calories in one large glutenous meal is a good way to pack on the pounds.
